Having broken up in 2004, the Milwaukee-based Pele remains legendary in the post-rock scene. Collection of Colonies of Bees, which was started in 1998 as a side project by Jon Mueller and Chris Rosenau, carries on the spirit of Pele today. The band has released a number of experimental recordings on its own label Crouton as well as Rosewood Union in the U.K. and many others. The band came into full bloom, however, only after Pele disbanded. In the wake of Pele, Collection of Colonies of Bees began to sound more band-like. After its release on Polyvinyl, the band has found a home at Radium, the rock division of the experimental label Table of the Elements, known for releasing recordings by artists such as Tony Conrad, John Fahey, Thurston Moore, and Jim O’Rourke. The band’s inimitable instrumental sound combines Pele-like pop-esque but tight rock aesthetic with an electro-minimalist approach and an avant-garde spirit. |
